Description of TREK
================

This list is for discussion of Star Trek as well as general science fiction and genre fandom. This list is open to anyone as long as you are willing to take a courteous approach to our conversations.

Trek is a linear descendant of the Fidonet TREK Echo, created in the mid-1980s to discuss Star Trek. After due consideration, subscribers of this list agreed that a more general definition of “topic” is now appropriate.

Acceptable subject matter in the current TREK Mailing List includes the wide range of topics, still including Star Trek as well as other science fiction TV series, movies, books, comics, games, and similar creations that fit the general definition of “genre” entertainment. This discussion may include the stories themselves as well as “behind the scenes” subjects.

It is that intent that the fantasy genre not be an appropriate “topic” in this list, understanding that it can sometimes be hard to differentiate between the two forms. Excessive “computer geek’ talk is also discouraged. The list owner reserves the right to make topic calls on such discussions on a case by case basis.

As a result of the guidelines above, the discussion can be expected to wander. It is not unusual to find discussions about history, philosophy, the media, our personal tastes and interests, and other matters directly or indirectly related to genre entertainment listed above. The list owner reserves the right to nudge the conversation with respect to any particular thread. Such nudges are rarely intended as reprimands, but are simply routine management of the list.

Policies
========

The number one rule of TREK is "Be Polite!" There is no excuse for insults, name calling, and other types of "flames." If we disagree with someone, we discuss those disagreements in a COURTEOUS manner.

On rare occasions, the list owner may make rulings about topics, threads, and general appropriateness of message subject matter. By posting in this list you agree to comply with the rules of the list, and with rulings of the list owner. If you think a conversation should be terminated, or of you have other complaints, please advise the list owner in private.

TREK is set so that messages from addresses that are not subscribed will be bounced to the owner for review. This does a good job of keeping out SPAM, but means you must post from the address you subscribed. You cannot forward messages to another address and reply from there.

Spoilers
=======

From time to time the list owner may request, or the list may agree, to use spoiler warnings to ensure that people do not have their enjoyment of a new TV episode, movie, etc. spoiled. During the identified period, the subject line of messages containing substantive details, and particularly about the resolution of the plot, shall contain the word "Spoiler." Typically, spoilers for any given TV episode should last no more than a week. Case by case decisions may be made for other kinds of media.

During the spoiler period, the subject line should also include either the name of the work, or other reference (like a date) that allows the reader to be sure about which series, episode, book, etc. you are talking.

After the agreed upon spoiler deadline has passed, edit the subject line of the message to remove the word “spoiler.”

Bounced Messages
===============

There are a few reasons your messages might be "bounced" and not be distributed to the list. The Listserv will not transmit a message in excess of 40k. For this reason, attached files are inappropriate and lengthy quotes are discouraged. If you do decide to send a very long message, you may need to break it into two parts. Even better, post it on a WWW site and use a message to the list to inform readers where your file may be found.

The listserv will also bounce a message addressed to more than ten total addresses or to which TREK is in the BCC address field. Occasionally messages come along to which TREK is only one of a gazillion addressees. Since TREK already goes to a lengthy list of subscribers, it is generally not appropriate to include it with a long list of other addressees.

Please consider carefully before you send a message or a reply to more than one mailing list. Many people who subscribe to multiple lists find this objectionable. It is also a pain for the list owner when somebody from the other list replies to both, and their message bounces because they are not a member here. Send your message to the one most relevant list, please, or send them individually.
